I am privileged to be the head of this department, which is making vital contribution to the overall Mission and Vision of Egerton University; I trust that this site will provide valuable information about the faculty, students, programs and services. Egerton University is known for its strong contribution in the field of Agriculture, and the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Management has a rich history of academic achievement.
About US
Preamble:
The Department of Agricultural Economics and Business Management is in the Faculty of Agriculture. The history of this department dates back to 1939 when it was first created to train manpower for farm management to meet the needs of the agriculture sub-sector in Kenya. The main emphasis in the program includes: Agriculture, Farm Management, Economics, Marketing Management, and practical orientation.
The department has expanded its emphasis to include a business orientation towards agriculture. The degree in Agribusiness management was designed to meet this challenge.

- Provide excellent education in a wide spectrum of academic disciplines.Expand the frontiers of knowledge through;

- Creating an intellectually stimulating and culturally vibrant, pleasant and safe environment in which its students and staff flourish.
To provide a conducive teaching, learning, research and development environment where staff and students can interact and compete effectively with their counterparts both nationally and internationally in terms of intellectual competence.

Objectives:
- To become a premier internationally department that provides need-base, consumer driven and good quality academic programmes.
- To play an effective role in the development of agriculture and agribusiness in conjunction with industry and tertiary sectors so as to contribute to the economic development of Kenya.
- To integrate the principle, values and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of departmental learning researched consultancies.
- To promote awareness of, and provide leadership to respond to, the issues and problems facing society with a view to ultimately solving and alleviating them..
- To ensure academic integrity by ensuring that all academic outputs are produced in high standards of international level.

Our Achievements
The department was ranked 1st among 72 departments in the university in the 2010/2011 performance contracting. Performance Contracting is a modern management instrument adopted in Kenya as part of the government’s public policy initiative to instill a culture of management by objectives. It is a freely negotiated performance agreement between the Government acting as the owner of a Government Agency and the management of the Agency which clearly specifies the intentions, obligations and responsibilities of the two contracting parties. The major aim of performance contacting is to improve effectiveness and efficiency in service delivery in the government institutions.
The chairman of the department, Dr. Benjamin K. Mutai, received the award on behalf of the department during big ceremony which coupled as the founder’s day in Egerton Castle, Njoro. This reflected the hard work and dedication of all teaching and subordinate staff members to serve selflessly and diligently its clientele. The chairman commended the effort made by all members of the department for ensuring the set goals were achieved hence the emerging first among 72 departments in the university. The department has vowed to remain on top in service delivery to the public and has put up structures and strategies to retain the universities prestigious prize. The chairman thanked all department staff for the effort put during the 2010/2011 calendar year and has promised greater things in coming years. Read more
